What this page has that the front does not is everything below. ## What a sheet is One thing, read closely, mounted with the reading signed. The object being read sits in the **specimen** — quoted exactly, in the edition we actually held, with the date somebody read it. Our reading sits on the **label** beside it. The line between those two is drawn in the layout rather than left to a reader’s good faith, because the characteristic failure on a site like this is not an invented source but a *tightened* one — a sentence trimmed to fit, with the attribution left attached. If we changed the words, they are ours. So a sheet is not a summary, and it is not a review. It is one object and one reading of it, kept apart on the same page so you can disagree with the second without doubting the first. ## A reading, an essay, a wall Three kinds so far, and the distinction is not decoration — it tells you what shape the argument on the sheet has. **[A reading](https://queering.earth/on-being-ill)** : Somebody else’s work, read in order and arriving somewhere. Eight of the ten. The specimen is theirs, the argument is ours, and the sheet ends somewhere it could not have started. **[An essay](https://queering.earth/coming-to-terms)** : Ours, written here, signed. There is no specimen to hold apart from the label because the whole sheet is the label. One so far. **[A wall](https://queering.earth/monotropa-uniflora)** : A chorus rather than a sequence: labelled slips in many hands, each signed, arguing by accumulation instead of by order. The form is borrowed from a herbarium sheet that has been in a drawer long enough to collect a stack of determination slips. The subject has to deserve it. One so far. A Stimpunks zine wall works by unattributed declaration, and that is the one move this cabinet cannot make, because here the citation *is* the product. So a wall here is a chorus of *labelled* slips, and mixing the two would be the failure. ## What the number says, and what it does not The number says when a sheet was accessioned. That is all it says. It is not a ranking, not a difficulty, not a reading order, and not a series — there is one accession run here and the kind is a label on it rather than a second sequence. No. 1 is not the place to start unless you want to start there. The plate on the front of the cabinet is the authority for a sheet’s number and its kind, and every other list of them on this site — this one, and the sibling cards at the foot of each sheet — is checked against it before anything ships. A card here that disagreed with the plate would fail the build rather than quietly misfile a sheet. ## How a sheet is checked Four things, each of which you can go and read. - **The specimen block** at the head of the sheet names the edition we read and the day we read it. - **The accession stamp and the provenance line** at the foot say when the sheet was mounted and how many times its label has been corrected since, each correction linked to the entry that made it. - **The [register](https://queering.earth/changelog)** logs every mounting and every correction, newest first, and files them by which sheet they happened to. - **The [ledger](https://queering.earth/ledger)** traces every quotation on the site to the work it was read in, including the attributions we got wrong and later restored. There are no hard facts here for everything, and that is the brief rather than a lowered bar. It does not extend one inch to the quotations.
